My surgery was 10/22/07 - I was a 35 yr. smoker (yuck). DR. Ho saved my life. I'm now a cancer survivor. 12/27/10 I survived a life saving surgery to have a stent inplant in my trachea by DR.Pelaez. I speak with a TEP & EL. I'm retired now but I enjoy speaking with kids about smoking and cancer and volunteering my time at the local hospital. I enjoy exploring Florida on my motorcycle. I'm also a cat lover :-)

John (Jack) Ruth

I was born in 1941 in Wilmington(actually Newport), DE.  Spent all of my childhood years in the same town. Started smoking regularly when I was 12.  Graduated from Conrad High School and went to work for the Dupont Co in Wilmington, DE.  In 1961, I joined the Marines and went through boot camp at Parris Island, NC.  During my four years in the Marines, I traveled to Camp Le Juanne, NC, Memphis Navel Air Station,. Tenn, Cherry Pt, NC, Atsugi Navel Air Station, Japan, NAHA, Okinawa and Formasa, Tiawan.  Highlights of that period include being a member of the base football team at Atsugi Japan and the Navy/Marine All Star Football team.  I resigned from active duty in 1965 and entered Wesley College in Dover, DE, played football and graduated in 1967.  I married my wife Sharral, (who I met at Wesley) of Marlton NJ, in Dec 1967.  Continued my education at Delaware State College in Dover, DE, graduating in 1970 with a degree in Recreation.  From 1970-74 I worked with children at the Fraim Boys Club in Wilmington, DE.  In 1974 I went to work for the Army as an Assistant Youth Director in Kaiserslautern, GE, received a promotion 1976 and moved to Frankfurt, GE as the regional director.  Took trips to Italy, Austria, Netherlands, England and France during this period. From there  I moved to Ft Knox, KY as the Ass't Recreation Director.  1n 1976 I moved to Ft Leonard Wood, MO as the Base Recreation Director.  I left Ft Leonard Wood in 1987 and moved to Stuttgart, GE.  Took numerous trips throughout Germany to see castles, fests  Received my last promotion there and, because of the draw down of US forces in Europe, moved to Seoul, Korea as a Youth Director at the Eighth US Army headquarters. Joined Alcoholic Anonymous in 1993 and am still a recovering alcoholic.  From there I moved to Daegu, Korea as the Family Support Officer.  I retired from civil service in 2003 and moved to our current location in Orlando, FL.  I got cancer of the larynx in 2007 I assume after smoking for 55 years.  I immediately joined the Greater Orlando Laryngectomee Family (GOLF) and have enjoyed our association with other larys.  My wife and I have been happily married for 44 years, enjoyed our world travels and association with our great military family as well as host nation families.  We have 3 great children (2 girls and 1 boy), two of which live here in Orlando and another living in South Carolina.  My hobby now is digital photography.  What a great life this has been...so far.
